Introducing ...

December, 2012

Evan Robert Alessi is here!  He was sure worth the wait!
Welcoming Evan Robert Alessi to the world !!!
First Family Photo @ hospital
Evan was born on December 9th at 11:13 PM Hong Kong time (9:13 AM Arkansas time) - he weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces and was 19.7 inches.  He was quick - we actually had checked into the hospital on Sunday evening because we were planning to be induced on Monday morning.  However, once after checking in - contractions started.  I was brought down to the labor floor at 9:50 pm and I had him shortly after.  Patrick has enjoyed being a big brother and keeping us up-to-date on Evan's actions: "Evan is night night" - "Evan eat" - "Evan sad". The hospital, doctors, and nurses were wonderful to us at the hospital and now we are settling in at home!

In other family news:  Our nanny/helper, Norlie, joined our family!  She has truly been a God-send and I can't imagine living in Hong Kong without her!  Patrick calls her 'Auntie' and she is terrific with both kids and a wonderful cook.  She fits right in with our family and we are enjoying getting to know her!

Other news from the past month:
How about the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame!!!  WOW!  We are so excited to be cheering for our favorite team in the National Championship this year.  Unfortunately, airline tickets to Miami and a child without a passport yet have made it impossible for us to get to the game ourselves. So excited for so many friends that are going to the game... we can't wait to watch the game - it will be on in the morning for us and I think we will go to the Notre Dame Club Game Watch here in Hong Kong.  Here are the boys in their Notre Dame apparel - Evan is obviously practicing his Game Face and he has the leprechaun stance mastered.  Patrick just looks like trouble as usual :)
Go Irish!!
Thanksgiving was wonderful despite being far away.  Tom and I went out to dinner on Thursday to an American 'Chicago' Restaurant: Dan Ryans... which served the complete meal.  We sat near a South Shore poster advertising Notre Dame Football - perfect!  Then on Saturday, our friends a few floors down hosted a Thanksgiving meal as well.  On Sunday we were quite full!

We are looking forward to spending Christmas in Hong Kong as a family!  It will be quiet and peaceful (well, maybe not considering we are still waking up with Evan in the middle of the night).  We don't have any special plans - just to enjoy each other!  Hong Kong is entering its 'cold' season... nothing compared to IN, IL, PA - but inside the apartment gets quite chilly because we don't have heat.... just space heaters.  But, that makes it feel like Christmas.  It wouldn't be Christmas without a sweater.  We got a Christmas Tree and also visited Santa - we actually saw Santa the day before Evan arrived, no tears from Patrick  - he just got more fearful of the man throughout his visit with him.  Now that I want to take both kids - Patrick refuses to go.  Whenever I mention visiting Santa he says "No Santa".

I kinda don't blame Patrick for being afraid of this Santa...
Visitors - Bill Boyd, a ND friend from college, visited us one weekend.  Patrick enjoyed showing him the market!  Tom and Bill went island hopping on Saturday and visited a real pirate cove - Tom hasn't stopped talking about it.  Christine Allen, a co-worker of Tom's from Walmart, was also in town and we got to see her one night for dinner.  It was so great to see familiar faces in Hong Kong :)

Tom also went to Japan for work and was able to catch up with some of his business school friends that he studied with when he studied abroad for the semester.  He enjoyed being in Toyko again :)

Back in Toyko!!
We appreciate all the Christmas Cards - we are planning to send late ones - like maybe Chinese New Year Cards.... with the baby arriving and lack of sleep, I have put that off.  If you'd like to add us to your Christmas list - we'd love it!  Our US address for sending letters/cards - (the mail gets fwd. to us a couple times a month - this address does not accept packages).

Month 2 in HK

November, 2012

I am 1 month away from becoming a mom 'again'.  Feeling good, anxious to meet our new little guy!  Went to doctor today and all looks good - we are blessed!  Tom leaves for a trip to Japan next week, so hoping baby doesn't make an early arrival and waits for his safe return. I'll be 36 weeks on Friday - hard to believe.

This past month we've finally felt like we are settled.  Tom and I have made it out of the house for a few nights and discovered some neat restaurants.  We went to Hong Kong Disneyland with Patrick.  He loved it - he didn't smile a bunch when he was there because he was just awe struck the entire time.  The park is much smaller than Disney World and geared more toward kids his age till Kindergarten - so it will be PERFECT for us.  It's about a 40 minute commute to the park so we'll be able to go for a morning or afternoon no problem... that's the perfect way to enjoy a theme park - just a few hours.  We got annual passes so we can enjoy it it small doses.  Here are some pictures of Patrick at Disney...
Patrick on his first ride - Dumbo!
Patrick after Dumbo - standing at the exit, wanting to go again!

It's A Small World - in complete awe!
We also have explored some more of Hong Kong.  We've taken the Star Line Ferry to Kowloon a few times.  We went on another ferry to Discovery Bay which is a cute little beach town and makes you feel like you are on vacation instead of Hong Kong.  We walked the beach, window shopped, played on the beach playground, and grabbed a late lunch - it was a nice and convenient get-a-way!  We've explored some parts of Central and Wan Chai - and are enjoying finding new stores and restaurants.  On all of our explorations, the high-light for Patrick has been boat rides - that itself is a field trip :) He'd be completely happy taking a taxi, bus, and ferry ride then coming home!

In between explorations - there was Halloween.  Our complex had a party for the residents and Trick or Treating.  I ran out of candy in 45 minutes.  I felt terrible!  Wasn't expecting the crowd.  Patrick was a fireman for Halloween - he wasn't crazy about dressing up in a costume, but he liked the candy!

Here are some pictures of us out and about the past month!
Of course I made them wear matching shirts!!
Discovery Bay - the beach!
Ferry rides are his favorite!

Halloween 2012 - Patrick was a Fireman and Baby Boy was a Pumpkin :)

We did have one 'not-so-good' week - we all got the flu or some sort of virus.  Tom was sent home from work with a mask!  Flu + Pregnancy do not mesh so well.  Patrick had it a day before Tom and I got it.  The best part was that the virus hit us the worst on a Tuesday which happened to be a holiday that Tom didn't have to go to work - so it was good we were all home to take care of each other... however, it took about 36 hours to run its course.  A few hours of the day we fell asleep and awoke to find Patrick playing and keeping himself busy (Parents of the Year!!).

What we did while we were sick!
Tom with mask

I've managed to finish my Christmas shopping for the little guys- probably part of the 'nesting' phase.  I know once baby gets here, I'll be lacking sleep and good judgement, so I just went and got it all done.  Really going to miss Thanksgiving this year - trying not to think about it.... instead trying to just focus on everything I'm thankful for instead of the great meal & family I'm missing.  2012 has been so good to us!  Praying for healthy arrival for the baby, a terrific 2013, and a continuing winning season for the Irish :)  That's about a big as an update that I have for now.  Next month will be more exciting as we will have someone else to write about :)

Living in Hong Kong - Getting Moved In :)

October, 2012
Dinner in our apartment the first night!

Dear Family/Friends,

Is it really mid-October already?  The past few weeks have been a blur.  I still can't believe we live in Hong Kong!! Patrick has transitioned very well...  For those wondering about his flight grade... we'll give him a generous C+ (the 9 hours he slept were great), the 6 hours he was up were kinda a disaster.  BUT we made it.  The next 3 days were foggy - we were all sleep deprived.  Patrick awoke around 1 or 2 in the morning and he was up for the day!  We finally made him go an entire day without a nap - and that fixed it.  It took me a little longer to adjust to the time change - I think I was waking up and worrying about him sleeping through the night.

We moved into our apartment within 3 days (moved in on a Friday, Sept. 28th) but didn't have any furniture except for our beds, dining room table (no chairs), one chair, and a few console tables.  Hardwood floors aren't comfortable to sit on 24 hours a day -  we spent a lot of time playing cars together on our bed, ate our meals on the kitchen floor, and spent as much time out of the apartment as we could so we didn't get cabin crazy.  We had a lot of errands to run - getting necessary supplies, ordering furniture, signing up for phone plans, etc... so we were quite busy.

Patrick's birthday was Oct. 2nd and it was his Golden Birthday since he turned two!  We took the Peak Tram that morning up to the top of one of the mountains and had a 360 degree view of Hong Kong... it was quite foggy that morning, but we still enjoyed the view.  Patrick's favorite part was the Tram or as he called it: Choo Choo.  We also went to Toys R Us the day before and spoiled him with some new toys.  Since we basically just had beds, we moved Patrick out of the travel pack n' play and moved him into his big boy bed and he loved it.  It's almost been two weeks and he hasn't attempted to get out once.  He calls for us when he wakes up and he is all smiles and grown up!  I do feel like he has matured so much since arriving - definitely a two year old!

Our air shipment came the first Thursday in October and it was like Christmas - Patrick was in heaven seeing his toys again.  I was pretty happy to see kitchenware and linens :)  Last weekend we got our TV and internet and our apartment started to feel more like a home!  The bulk of our furniture order came yesterday and our couch is being delivered tomorrow!!!  We still have some things to order (rugs and decor), but for the most part - we are finally in our furnished home!!

Overall, we couldn't be more happy with the complex that we chose.  It is absolutely perfect for families and for kids. With all the play areas in the complex there aren't very many dull moments.  Getting around Hong Kong is easy, however, with children - tends to be more of a challenge....I'd say that has been the hardest part to adjusting - not much is 'stroller' friendly - and with being pregnant, it's not easy for me to get around... it's pretty hilly.  But everyday, I'm finding easier routes and short-cuts to places :)  I really miss the grocery store.  But I'm learning how to on-line grocery shop - and just found out about another international grocery store today from a friend that I can't wait to check out!  I do like to explore solo first to see what I am able to accomplish with a stroller before dragging Patrick across town - I've learned my lesson by trying to haul a stroller up or down a flight of stairs :)

We decided to look for a live-in helper/nanny.  It's the way of life here - everyone has a helper, even if they don't have children.  A helper would benefit us in helping with both kids and the household chores.  As I said before, convenient city - just not easy to get around with child/stroller - having a helper helps with that!  She does the shopping and cleaning so I can spend the majority of my day focused on the boys.... or if I need to go out and do something, she is there to help!  We interviewed just a few and fell in love with one last Sunday. We are in the process of getting her under contract so we are crossing our fingers all goes well :)

Tom's job is going well - he likes what he is doing.  The commute is pretty simple when he leaves at the right time of day.  He goes to work before the rush and depending on the day comes home during the rush or stays at the office till the rush is over.  He has a trip to Japan mid-November so as long as baby looks like he is staying put, Tom will have a few days in Japan with work.  I know he is really excited to go considering he has spent time there in high school, college, and graduate school.

Baby Update:  Went to the doctor and all looks healthy.  I've had my days of being really worn out and tired, but I've also had days of bursts of energy and trying to get everything organized.  It's crunch time - baby is coming weather we are ready or not... less than 2 months to go (hopefully not more).  I think it's absolutely crazy that I'm going to give birth here - when I stop to think about it I start to get really nervous... but the hospital and doctor are great so I try not to over-think and just go with the flow.  Which for those that know me... sometimes that can be difficult... but surprisingly, been so busy with relocating, I haven't had much time to stress otherwise.  I really think Patrick is putting together that there will be a baby here soon.  Points out babies all the time!  Yesterday when the crib came for the baby room - he just pointed to it and said 'baby!'.  I think he'll be a great big brother and a helper!  I'm starting to really train him to be more independent.  He has his moments :)

That's the update for you all!  Wish there was something really exciting to write about - but really we've been focused on getting settled.  We are hoping to do some 'tourist' things in the upcoming weekends so they'll be something fun to write about.  We have a babysitter for Saturday night - and that itself is pretty exciting :)

Hong Kong...Here We Come!!!

In our new living room!!
 September, 2012

A few days till departure.  It has been quite a month.  I still can't believe ALL that has been accomplished.  After our preliminary trip to Hong Kong - we arrived back in Chicago to pick up Patrick and spent the evening with my entire family.  It was the first time all the little cousins were together since Thanksgiving - so it was fabulous.  Patrick clung to us for the next 24 hours and it was so nice to have the extra hugs from him.  The next day we took off for PA and CT to visit Tom's family - we spent a day at the farm and a week at the beach and the weather was fantastic.  It was great to have a week after the stress in Hong Kong to unwind and relax.  After our week out east, we arrived back in Arkansas and Tom was in town for about 18 hours before he had to fly back to Hong Kong/China for work.  Patrick and I attempted to get back to a 'normal' routine, but there were lots of errands around Northwest Arkansas that we did while Tom was gone.  The best news was that our house that was on the market for about a week - had been rented! It was a relief that we didn't have that hanging over our heads for very long.

Once Tom returned to Arkansas, the serious packing begun.  Tom's dad & Trish came in town last weekend and helped us get the boat out of the lake, winterized, and in long-term storage.  We had a great weekend with them in town, got a lot done - but had some fun too.  At home we began sorting piles: long-term storage and Hong Kong.  We didn't take really any furniture - mainly we took clothes, toys, baby stuff, and household items (kitchenware / linens). Some items went air-freight, other items are in our suitcases. Our cars have been sold and the movers started yesterday (hopefully finishing by early tomorrow!).  We've been stationed at a hotel for our remaining nights.  We are keeping ourselves busy with watching the house become empty, visiting friends, and taking Patrick to all of his favorite places one last time.  We leave on Sunday (Sept. 23rd) for Chicago and then Monday we leave for Hong Kong!

Below are some pictures of the apartment in Hong Kong.... we actually are getting the unit above this one because it has recently been updated (bathrooms, closets, and kitchen appliances).  However, we did bargain for some furniture that you see in the pictures - it made our shopping a bit easier.  I've spent many evenings on Ikea's website thinking of how we will furnish our apartment.  Decorating with limited timing is kinda stressful - luckily when Tom went to Hong Kong for work - he was able to order some furniture!  The apartment is 3 bedroom/2.5 bathroom and it has a 'servant quarter' (bedroom/bathroom) if we decide to hire a live-in maid/nanny. The closets are a great size and there is an extra walk-in closet in the hallway which will be great for the stroller, car seats, and suitcases!  The complex is a great place full of expats and families.  It has a pool, gym, and indoor playground :) It's close to Tom's work, the hospital, and near an area called Central so we'll have places to go to (restaurants and shops) that aren't too far.  There is a mini-mart in the complex which will be great and a big grocery store is within walking distance.  We are hoping to stay in temporary housing for just a few days while the rest of the furniture gets ordered and arrives.  We can't wait to move in!  Pictures of our place will be posted in the future!

The hardest part of the last month has been having to say goodbye to friends and family.  There are so many friends that we haven't seen in such a long time because we are all spread across the country.... knowing they won't be in the same time zone to give a free text of phone call to is sad!  Thank God for internet, email, Facebook, Skype, Facetime, blogs, etc.  It will be easy to keep in touch!   Saying goodbye to our families was difficult.  It's just a short two years, but we also know that holidays this year will be quiet and vastly different and we'll have a new little guy that anxiously wants to meet family!  AND I know I'll be wanting to show off my new little handsome man as well.  Many family members are planning trips to visit so that keeps us smiling - and we hope to visit family next summer as well!  We've also had a rough time saying goodbye to our second family, our friends in Northwest Arkansas.  It's hard to believe we knew no one here 4 years ago.  We've made some lifelong friends here that have made Arkansas a difficult place to leave. I never in a million years thought that we'd love Arkansas so much.... life here has been wonderful and we are looking forward to returning :)

We are very much looking forward to living in Asia - hopefully doing some traveling with the kids and taking lots of pictures for them to look at when they are older.  Even though the boys are young and won't remember much about our time in Hong Kong, we plan to instill the love of traveling, culture, and new experiences that Tom and I both share.

Patrick & Baby update:  Patrick has done surprisingly well with everything that is going on.  He has put up with errands around town instead of days at various playdates and the park.  I'll be very excited when the air shipment arrives with his toys so he can start adjusting to his new home entirely.  He turns 2 the first week of October - he is such a big boy and looking forward to becoming an older brother (at least that is what we are telling him!)  I'll be 30 weeks next week..... time has surely flown this time around.  I meet with my new doctor again Oct. 8th. We are due early December for another precious boy to steal our hearts!  Can't wait!!!

Moving Abroad

August, 2012

This is my first time 'blogging' :)  Welcome family & friends!

Most of you know that moving abroard with Walmart has always been something we have talked about in the past... it's now a reality! Walmart is sending us to Hong Kong!  It has been a fast decision and one we didn’t really see coming until a few weeks ago.  The last few weeks, the move has stirred in our hearts and minds - he got the job - and now we’ve been talking with relocation and things are moving pretty quickly.  Tom is going to be the Senior Director of Asia Strategy and the job is based in Hong Kong with some travel throughout India, China, and Japan.  It’s the perfect fit for him!!

It may not be the exact perfect timing, considering we will be moving overseas when I’m 30/32 weeks pregnant with Baby Boy Alessi #2 (due date: December 7th), but we figured God wouldn’t give us this opportunity if it wasn’t meant to be!  Hopefully, I can make it through the 16 hour plane ride with Patrick and pregnant.  It’s a two year assignment so we plan to return to our Arkansas home in just a short two years.  Departure date is still being determined, but aiming for the last week of September.

Tom and I actually just returned from Hong Kong - we were there for a preliminary trip to look for housing, doctor/hospital, visit the office, etc.  Patrick was watched by family in Chicago while we ventured away to look for a new home!  We had a successful trip and got a lot accomplished, despite being jet-legged the entire week.  We found both a doctor & hospital and found a great apartment.  We even had time to order a sectional couch with a pull-out queen bed (for all of you who would like to visit!!).  Our apartment is a 3 bedroom / 2.5 bathroom located in the Mid-levels (near Central) Hong Kong.  My favorite part is that it has a big closets and an extra storage closet.  Tom has about a 15 minute commute to the office, we are 10 minutes from the hospital, and it is on the 26th floor in a complex with lots of ex-pat families.  It has an indoor playground, gym, and heated outdoor pool which will be great for me and the two boys!

Hoping this blog will allow family and friends stay connected with us and see our little boys!  We’d appreciate your thoughts and prayers in the next month as we pack, put things in storage, and move to our new home in a foreign city.  An extra prayer and good vibes for a good boy on a long flight would be awesome too!

We are planning to come home and visit at least once a year!  Address to come soon & pics of our new place - we love snail mail, packages, cookies, etc :)

Love,
The Alessi Family
